A leaky toilet is not just a nuisance; it could be costing you money.

It is "Fix a Leak Week" in New York City. It is a time when the New York City Department of Environmental Protection wants you to find leaks in your house and fix them.

NYC DEP experts say a leaking toilet can waste six thousand gallons of water, costing a $100 a day. So, NYC DEP is handing out kits to fix that. You will get dye tablets to find a leak like that in a toilet, pipe, or faucet.

Also in the kit, items to conserve water, like a toilet tank bank. Albert Kramer, with the NYC Environmental Protection Department, explained how it works in a video they posted online. Kramer says, " If you fill one and drop it in your toilet tank you can save nearly 1 gallon per flush." And he says your toilet will work the same way it always does.

You can also get a hold of low flow showerheads and faucet aerators to save water in your kitchen and bathrooms. All options to save water and money.

NYC DEP is handing out the kits at the following locations, while supplies last:

March 19, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. - Staten Island: 60 Bay Street, 6th Floor

March 20, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. - Queens & Brooklyn: 96-05 Horace Harding Expressway, Lobby, and 250 Livingston Street, 8th Floor
