Adults who have suffered sexual abuse and never had the chance to take legal action will have some extra help from The Healing Center.
The Healing Center is a space in Brooklyn for those who have suffered due to family violence and other forms of abuse, and they are available to help survivors take legal steps.
The New York Survivors Act creates a one-year window for adult survivors of abuse to come forward and file lawsuits against their sexual abusers, despite the statute of limitations.
“A lot of survivors… the way that they do survive is really to put it in the back of your brain and disassociate from that,” said Maria Santiago, the elder justice advocate for The Healing Center.
Santiago says legal action can be overwhelming for victims, including documenting and sharing their stories for the court. For more information on The Healing Center, click here
