The American Academy of Dermatologists reports that nearly 30 million women suffer from hair loss. Many of them spend considerable time and money struggling to find solutions that work.
News 12's consumer reporter Janice Lieberman spoke to hair restoration specialist Dr. Michael Wolfeld, who says there are affordable products that can help.
“Option is Rogaine, you can buy it at the pharmacy. You can also buy it online. It does work to help thicken your hair,” he said.
Rogaine is an FDA approved treatment available for around $30 to $40. Its generic version, Minoxidil, runs for $15 to $20.
Shampoos containing anti-inflammatory ingredient Ketoconazole have been shown to thicken hair with regular use.
“One option is Nizoral shampoo, which is also sold over the counter,” he said.
Wolfeld also recommends a vitamin supplement called Nutrafol, which costs $80 a month.
