The Department of Corrections says the alleged accidental release of a Rikers Island inmate was not its error.
"There was no accidental release. Based on the documentation provided by the courts, the release from custody was in accordance with our policy," the department said in a statement.
The suspect, James Reino, was released Thursday despite an active warrant being in place. The Department of Corrections says it had not received a copy of the warrant at the time of his release.
Reino was arrested in March for contempt of court. He's scheduled for a court appearance on April 12.
The incident follows two recent mistaken releases of inmates on Rikers last month.
