Gov. Andrew Cuomo released a timeline Thursday for four new Metro-North stations that are set to be completed in the year 2025.
"The train is on the move. This is happening, and it's happening now,” said Cuomo.
Gov. Cuomo says $1.5 billion was set aside in the state budget. He says the federal government has now signed off and that the last obstacle has been cleared.
Members of Community Board 11 told News 12 they were skeptical that the proposed four new Metro-North stations in the East Bronx would ever be built.
“Most of our residents here, they just want to see it happen. Until it happens, you can't believe it,” said Community Board 11 District Manager Jeremy Warneke.
“What do we do post-COVID? We build. We build big and we don't take no for an answer,” said Cuomo.
The stations planned for Hunts Point, Parkchester/Van Nest, Morris Park and Co-Op City will save Bronx residents an estimated half-hour to 50 minutes, with access right to Penn Station.
“This will create thousands of jobs, ladies and gentlemen, it will create opportunities for more housing, it will be a shot in the arm for economic development,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr.
Officials acknowledge that with the new stations will come increased car traffic to the area and say one of the next challenges is making sure there's enough parking for both commuters and residents.
