The combination of the heat and humidity today will have the city sizzle. These dangerously high temperatures will make it tough to stay cool.
If you're trying to beat the heat, the CDC suggests staying inside in an air-conditioned location, drinking plenty of water and try to keep out of the sun. If you do need to go out, wear loose and light-colored clothing and sunscreen.
The governor is urging New Yorkers to get care if the heat gets to them.
If you start to feel sick with a headache, becoming lightheaded, nauseous, start to vomit or have cramps, seek medical attention right away.
Con Edison has these tips for New Yorkers to keep cool and not burn a hole in their pocket:
+ Set your air conditioner to the lowest comfortable temperature. Remember, every degree cooler is going to cost you more.
+ Run appliances in the early morning or late at night when it's cooler outside.
+ Keep the cool air in by keeping doors closed when the ac is cranking.
+ Keep blinds, shades and curtains closed. About 40 percent of unwanted heat comes from windows, Con Edison says.
+ Promote circulation and keep cool with fans.
+ Grab that timer and set it to turn the air conditioner on 30 minutes before you get home. That way, you aren't paying to cool the house when no one is there.
+ Keep air conditioner filters clean.
News 12's team of meteorologists are predicting these high temperatures will last well into the week.
