5ds agoTenants at a Morris Heights residential building that was the site of a partial collapse saw rain pouring out of the ceiling lights into the lobby due to Saturday's torrential downpours.
They said the situation at 1915 Billingsly Terrace is alarming for them there because the partial collapse back that happened back in December 2023.
"The water is pouring through the ceiling. It's coming through light fixtures," said Zoe Kheyman, staff attorney of the Legal Aid Society. "This has been a severely distressed property for many years. It's just the result of delayed repairs, long term neglect."
Kheyman said these tenants can't catch a break. The building's partial collapse led to vacate orders, mass displacement and heartbreak for the people who live in the building.
They not only dealt with flooding in the lobby but in their apartments as well.
Tenant Jacqueline Tomlinson showed News 12 of what her closet looked like when she arrived home Saturday.
"Everything was just pouring water like I was outside. Pouring water. Wet everything up," she said.
The videos she recorded also showed electrical appliances soaked and personal items left beyond repair.
Kheyman said they Legal Aid Society has been working with tenants since the collapse and that they have many concerns.
"We're concerned for electrical fires. We're concerned for the structural stability of the building. At this time, the city has not issued any vacate orders or any violations related to this that would indicate tenants need to vacate," Kheyman said.
Kheyman added that the Legal Aid Society is trying to do everything it can to try to confirm structural stability of the building and keep the tenants safe.
The Department of Buildings told News 12 that management was issued a violation for failure to maintain the building. The Legal Aid Society also said that it is suing David Kleiner, Yonah Roth, 1915 Realty LLC, and Moishe "Mo" Doe, along with the New York City Department of Buildings (DOB), the Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) and the the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH).
