‘Trauma Smart’ program changes approach to kids who act out
The Administration of Children's Services is trying what they call a “holistic” approach to addressing children who act out.
EarlyLearn NYC programs, such as the one taught at Bronx Community College, provide child care to families in the city, but the “Trauma Smart” program includes emotional education.
The ACS, which runs EarlyLearn, launched Trauma Smart three years ago. The program trains teachers and parents to better deal with children who may act out.
The teachers are trained to recognize standout behavior and address it calmly, so the student eventually learns to calmly address their emotions themselves.
Trauma Smart also includes parents in the lessons through monthly social groups, allowing them to get involved in their children’s emotional development in the home.
ACS says by spring 2020, all of the city's nearly 400 EarlyLearn programs will be trained in Trauma Smart.
