Today is the deadline for the Trump administration to reveal an update and solution on how they plan to fund SNAP or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program for the month of November while the government remains shutdown.
Federal judges emphasize that SNAP must be funded using the billions of dollars in emergency funds.
The rulings come after the United States Department of Agriculture planned to freeze payments to SNAP, citing a lack of money. The administration argues federal emergency funds are set aside for natural disasters and emergencies such as hurricanes, tornadoes and floods.
It's Nov. 3, three days after SNAP benefits should have been distributed. Benefits that over one million New York City residents rely on.
Advocates and those who use SNAP say this halt forces them to choose between paying other bills and buying groceries. It comes amid soaring grocery prices.
Today's rulings may likely run into some appeals and if not the process of loading SNAP benefits onto their cards can take up to a week or more in some cases.
