Playing on a Division 1 baseball team is an accomplishment for any athlete. Brothers on the same team are even rarer, but David and Julio Marcano take a step further – they are twins.

“It’s great. We just hit each other up, go to the field, practice and we’re just out there all day and we never get bored of each other, so we already find something to do on the field,” says Julio.

Born in Venezuela but raised in Houston, the seniors decided to come to NJIT because of its athletic and academic offerings. They are both studying mechanical engineering and are both in the top of their class.

But their dream is to hear their names called during the summer MLB Draft.

“Ever since we were 4 years old, watching TV, watching the major leaguers play baseball, it has always been a dream,” David says.

If the brothers don’t get drafted, the plan is to play in the Cape Cod League this summer and then return to NJIT to get their master’s degree.

“We’re confident that if baseball doesn’t work out, we’re going to be in a good situation regardless,” says Julio.

The brothers are now focused on finishing out NJIT’s regular season and then graduating. They say that doing it together is the best part.

“We’re twins. Playing Division 1 baseball at the same school, we were fortunate enough to be in the honors college as well,” says David. “So being able to share that experience will prepare us for the rest of our lives.”

But this doesn’t mean that there isn’t a little bit of sibling rivalry. Both say that they are the better baseball player.

NJIT is heading to UMBC this weekend for a four-game series.
