A hip-hop museum has plans to build a 57,000-square-foot, two-story space on a vacant riverfront lot.

After four years and four separate locations, the Universal Hip Hop Museum will be a part of a proposed development called Bronx Point on Harlem River.

Hip hop artists came to the empty lot Wednesday to announce the building plans, saying they are excited the museum is being built in the Bronx, where hip-hop originated.

“This culture, this art form pretty much changed the world,” Grand Wizzard Theodore says. “We’re here where it all started.”

The development will be used as a cultural institution and tourist destination.

The space will also have a movie theater, outdoor performance space and 1,000 affordable apartments.

The space for the museum still needs to be approved by the City Council.

If approved, the museum is projected to open in 2022.
