This year marks the 105th anniversary of Operation Santa, a program that permits the United States Postal Service to make the holidays brighter for children nationwide by responding to their letters to Santa Claus.

This year, Operation Santa is paying special attention to those letters coming from Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, where thousands of children are experiencing the devastation of major hurricanes.

News 12 is told that the USPS is running a pilot program this year, in which New Yorkers can log online, review letters and participate by responding to letters and granting wishes.

"If we could help relieve [their suffering] and give them a little sense of happiness around Christmas, whether big or small, it's good to do that,” says Kimberly Olive, of Long Island.

Kevin Crocilla, a New York Postmaster tells News 12 that the amount of volunteers they have for Operation Santa is not enough to answer the hundreds of thousands of letters they receive. Fortunately, the digital age has enabled the postal service to expand their reach.

Letters are being accepted until Dec. 13.
