The United States Postal Service is offering some advice to make sure packages arrive at their intended destinations this holiday season.
Video from last month sent by police shows a suspect walk right up to the front steps of a Bronx home and take off with an unattended package that was delivered there.
To deter that, USPS advises customers to avoid sending cash by mail and to not leave their packages unattended. The service also recommends changing the package's address while it's in transit if you won't be home when it's delivered, or to customize the delivery by providing instructions for your mail carrier online about where it can be left.
Instead of having a package delivered to your home, USPS says you can also ship it to the post office, where it could be held for pickup. You can also require a signature at the time of delivery or use registered mail.
Lastly, you can rent a PO box to make sure your mail stays secure at the post office.
The USPS estimates it will deliver more than 15 billion pieces of mail this holiday season.
