Utility crews ready to tackle storm-related power outages

Officials say they are ready for possible for power outages that Sunday night's coastal storm could cause throughout Long Island.
The storm is expected to bring high-winds and that is a concern for neighborhoods like the North Shore community of Wading River, where tall trees could come down onto wires and knock out power.
PSEG Long Island said it is ready with more than 800 crews working overtime islandwide for the storm that is expected to bring strong winds and cause downed trees and power outages.
In Riverhead, Town Supervisor Yvette Aguiar is keeping a close watch on the Peconic Riverfront where the area is always a flooding concern, especially with a full moon and high tide tonight.
"We are prepared and we’re going to weather the storm, no pun intended, and will continue to keep the riverfront safe," Aguiar said.
Business owners like Jeff Schaeffer, of Peconic County Brewery, located just feet away from the riverfront, are prepared.
"Being a brewery right here on the river, we do have some equipment that sits in weird spots that we do have to make sure there are a ton of sandbags around it for safety," Schaeffer.
Over in the Town of Brookhaven, 200 Highway employees are on standby and there is plenty of salt and sand ready to go. Brookhaven is 520 square miles — roughly the size of Nassau County — running from the Sound, to the South Bay, to the ocean, so conditions can vary greatly.
Superintendent of Highways Dan Losquadro said this storm will be tricky, but crews are prepared for anything.
"We are going to have to see what this storm brings us when it starts, when it changes over, hopefully when it changes over. But again, these storms can be very unpredictable when they hug the coast like this," Losquadro said.
Officials also shared some storm safety tips. They advised residents:
- Stay away from downed power lines.
- No generators inside your home.
- Secure outside objects.
- Make sure you have battery powered radio and flashlights.
- Charge your cell phones.
- Stock up on bottled water.
