Gov.
Andrew Cuomo announced that more than 300 churches across the state and several
more senior NYCHA housing developments will become vaccination sites this week.
It's part of an effort to ensure fairness and equity
in vaccine distribution among
communities of color.
Cuomo says
that vaccines will be deployed to four more NYCHA housing sites to increase the
number of seniors vaccinated.
The new
locations will allow for an additional 3,000 New York residents and eligible
seniors to receive the coronavirus vaccine by Tuesday, he says.
Cuomo
visited a vaccine pop-up site in
Brooklyn on Saturday, where
he and other elected officials urged communities of color to take
the vaccine.
He says he understands there is a lack of trust and accessibility,
which is why the state is focusing on getting sites open at NYCHA housing sites
in the city.
According to
the governor’s office, 250,400 first doses of the vaccine continue to arrive
across the state for this week.
The governor
says his goal is to have vaccination sites at all 33 NYCHA housing
developments.
A total of 7 million people in the state are currently eligible for the
vaccine, but at the current rate of
weekly supply that New York is
getting, Cuomo says it will would take months to vaccinate
every eligible adult.
