According to FDNY, one person was taken to the hospital with serious injuries after a fire broke out inside a third floor apartment at 1520 Thieriot Ave., just before noon on Friday.

Neighbors tell News 12 that they weren't close with the man who lived inside the apartment but they would see him from time to time.

"My aunt did say occasionally you would smell smoke in the hallway like maybe he smoked cigarettes or cigars," said Guadalupe, whose aunt lives right next door to where the fire started.

Residents say the damage done to their apartments was minimal.

"It's just really smoky, we're waiting for everything to clear out right now," said Vanessa Alvarado, who lives on the fourth floor.
