Tenants at a building in Van Nest told News 12 on Friday they are taking desperate measures to stay warm after living with no heat for over a month.
"We're going to be cold and I'm going to be sleeping in my hoodie," said tenant Unique Jackson-Flanders.
Jackson-Flanders has lived at 1565 Odell Street for over 20 years. She said this is not her first time dealing with heat issues. As a result of the freezing conditions in her apartment, her husband, Keith has been using the oven to keep their apartment warm.
"It’s ridiculous. They turned it on at one time, in the middle of the month, and then they tried it out and they cut it off," he said.
Notices around the building alerted residents of an emergency steam repair scheduled on Oct. 29. Residents, however, told News 12 the issue has not been resolved, and they have been left without any updates.
"We have not received any heat, except last night. We've had heat for about an hour and then no heat," said Susan, another tenant.
Susan said she is now wearing sweaters and coats at home to stay warm.
"Some of us have heaters, but then that increases your electric bill. That's not fair," she said.
News 12 reached out to the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development and was still waiting for a response as of Friday night.
