Members of Asian civil rights groups gathered in Sunset Park Tuesday in an effort to clear up misconceptions about a stabbing that left one man dead and three others injured. 

The stabbing happened on Feb. 26. Police said there was gambling happening at the time of the incident, but organizers of Tuesday’s event say the people involved in the incident strongly reject that claim. 

Leaders from BRACE USA and the Coalition of Asian Americans for Civil Rights came together to discuss the matter. They say it was a robbery and murder and are offering a reward for information leading to the arrests and perpetrators involved that left 43-year-olf Yong Zheng dead.

“What happened on February 26, Mr. Zheng, sacrificed himself to save several people that were being robbed and unfortunately, he lost his life and he left behind two children, one 14 years old and one 5 years old, and this is a very tragic story. Within this instance, we also have another person that is still critically injured right now he still in the hospital,” an organizer tells News 12. 

News 12 is told one person is in custody at this time. Police say William Smith is facing charges of murder, assault, robbery and criminal possession of a weapon in connection to the incident. 

The organizers of the event held a moment of silence in his memory and said his actions that night was nothing short of heroic. 

Police believe the suspect was acting with around eight or nine more people during the robbery.
