A video going viral on social media shows NYPD officers scuffling with a teen suspect in the Bronx, and the NYPD is now probing the incident that some are calling an incident of excessive force.
The incident happened on Friday at West 225th Street and Broadway. The video shows the 16-year-old suspect, Alfred Burns, on top of a police officer on the ground, with another officer on top of him.
Police say that two officers from the 50th Precinct were told Burns stole a bike from the front of a store. When those officers approached Burns, he allegedly began struggling with one of them, pushing him to the ground.
Investigators say that while they were on the ground, Burns put his hands around the neck of the officer that he was on top of. That is when the police officer on top of Burns started punching him repeatedly in the head as onlookers begged for him to stop.
The video has prompted the NYPD's Internal Affairs Bureau to open an investigation into the incident.
Police say Burns has several prior arrests, including robbery and attempted robbery charges. He is now charged with assault, petit larceny, resisting arrest, criminal possession of stolen property and impersonation, because officers say he gave them a fake name.
News 12 spoke with Burns' mother, who says her son received multiple stitches as a result of the incident.
