A Bronx community began to say goodbye to NYPD officer Alexis Martinez Thursday at his visitation.
The line to get into Ortiz Funeral Home stretched well down the block for Martinez, who was killed by his father in an apparent murder-suicide. Included in the crowd was NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban.
Since Martinez’s death on Aug. 2, Martinez’s family has seen an outputting of support from those who knew them and those who want to help.
Martinez was a five-year veteran of the NYPD who was recently promoted and was working toward his detective gold shield.
Aside from his work, family members say Martinez was supportive of his community and as a former collegiate baseball player, he coached youth sports and even funded a scholarship for teens.
A funeral service for Martinez is set for Friday. He will be laid to rest in his home country of the Dominican Republic.
