Good evening everyone. We start with breaking news. Tonight. News 12 has just learned that a police officer is dead after a crash in Dutchess County. It happened on the southbound Taconic State Parkway near mile marker 37. The road is closed. News twelve's Jade Nash joins us with more. Take a look at this video shot around 830 Monday night. It shows a police vehicle on the side of the road with damage to its windshield. East Fishkill. Police confirm just after six pm, an officer's car left the roadway for unknown reasons and hit a tree. The was taken to mid Hudson Regional Hospital where they later died. According to police authorities say the crash happened as the officer was on their way to the hospital where a victim was transported in relation to a separate crash earlier in East Fishkill, Jay Nash News 12. And as we work to get more details tonight, police departments are sending their thoughts town of Hyde Park. Police wrote on Facebook. Our thoughts and prayers are with the East Fishkill Police Department. Tonight, the village of Wappingers Falls. Police Department released a similar statement to their quote, brothers and sisters of the East Fishkill Police Department.

Tonight, the East Fishkill community is mourning after the line of duty death of a longtime member of the police department. Here's our Ben Nandy with more from East Fishkill. Very heartbroken and sad 47 year old officer Daniel Didato was a regular at this deli right by the East Fishkill Police Department. The owner tells me this hits her customers and staff hard. We've known him for years. The customers coming in here, family, friends with him for a long time. It was just a shock for everybody at work when everyone got out, police say Didato was on the Taconic parkway heading to Westchester Medical Center to interview a victim of an earlier accident just after six Monday evening when his cruiser veered off the road and hit a tree. Didato was rushed to the hospital where he later died. Just an extremely difficult time for everyone. Dido's friend from high school East Fishkill town supervisor, Nicholas d'alesandro is reeling too. D'allesandro says this was the first time the department ever lost an officer in the line of duty. He's touched by the outreach from the law enforcement community. Many, many officers of our police department and many police officers from our surrounding departments. Sheriff's office, State Police, the outpouring of support was tremendous. Didato started his career in 2001 as an officer with the New York City Department of Environmental Protection. He then joined East Fishkill PD in 2005 where he served for nearly 19 years. The New York State Police and Dutchess County Sheriff's Office have stepped in to take all of East Fishkill calls for now so their officers can have some time to grieve and process.
