The mayor says it was not an easy decision, and says many events will be postponed to a later date.
In addition to June cancellations, he also addressed the continuous need for PPE and surgical gowns.
He said he is reaching out to the federal government for more surgical gowns and gown alternatives. The federal government gave New York City 265,000 Tyvek suits over the weekend to help with the demand.
Mayor de Blasio says the city needs more fabric to make 400,000 gowns by May 23.
He says he is also asking other states with stockpiles of gowns or fabrics to support New York City.
