A family-run bike store in the Bronx opened during the pandemic just in time for the city’s need for bikes, as New Yorkers remain weary of public transit.
The Garcia cousins say they are no strangers to working on bikes together and have done so for the last 10 years. They decided to open their own shop, Garcia’s Bicycle Shop, in early July.
"It’s been good, better than we expected. We thought that we were going to start off slow, but it started good and we're happy about that,” said owner Jorge Garcia.
They say people who have never owned a bike before are looking for one because they don’t want to be near people on subways.
They say shops are having trouble keeping bikes in stock.

They say they have a selection of affordable bikes for kids and adults that they’re working to keep stocked.
The cousins have been preparing bikes since their teens and say any customers who have bike problems or want adjustments can bring them in to get fixed.
They are open seven days a week and until 9 p.m. on most nights.
