Broken bottles, plastic cups and a river of roadside trash can be seen flowing down White Plains Road - much to the dismay of local residents.
“This place is horrible," says Mekieba Simpson. "It's dirty, all types of rats and everything in this area - I'm looking to move."
Simpson isn't the only one looking to leave the area.
Longtime residents, like Randy, say the go out of their way to avoid White Plains Road due to the minimal effort the city takes to keep it clean.
“I don't see an effort being put on this block to keep it clean," says Randy. "That's why I kind of avoid this area."
In just the past month, there have been almost 10 complaints reported to 311, ranging from rodents to dirty conditions and litter basket requests.
In response, White Plains Road Business Improvement District executive director, Malcolm Gray says he's ready to bring change back to the community.
"[The BID] is watching, we are listening to what's being said, and we are advocating to the best of our ability to address those issues," said Gray.
Malcolm says that just this week, he walked down the BID and reported 311 calls for streetlight repairs and connected with the Department of Transportation to have them installed.
In an initiative to keep the community clean, Gray says he is also creating a neighborhood cleanup in partnership with the Pelham Parkway and Bronx Park East organizations for a neighborhood cleanup, with plans to wrap up by the fall.
The White Plains Road Business Improvement District tells News 12 that it is encouraging those looking to get involved in volunteering to contact the BID directly.
