Harvey Marcelin, the woman charged with killing and dismembering another woman's body in Brooklyn, was arraigned in court on Wednesday, according to Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez. 

Marcelin is charged with first- and second-degree murder, tampering with physical evidence and concealment of a human corpse, according to Gonzalez. Marcelin was ordered held without bail. 

Marcelin’s next court date will be on May 19. She faces a maximum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole if convicted of the top count.

Gonzalez said, “This shocking and horrific murder ended the life and desecrated the remains of a beloved member of the Brooklyn community, and her family and many friends continue to be in my prayers. Few crimes in my long career as a prosecutor rise to this level of extreme depravity, and we will vigorously pursue justice on Ms. Leyden’s behalf.”

Police arrived at the corner of Pennsylvania and Atlantic avenues a few weeks ago to find a human torso inside of a garbage bag that was inside of a shopping cart earlier this month. Police then obtained surveillance video of the 68-year-old victim, Susan Leyden, entering Marcelin's apartment on Feb. 27.

According to police, Leyden was seen carrying a floral-patterned bag as she entered the complex. Marcelin was seen exiting that same apartment complex a few days later and carrying that floral bag in which the human torso was found. Things escalated after police executed a search warrant and say they found a human head inside Marcelin's apartment. The body parts found by police belonged to Leyden, they say.
