This Women's History Month, News 12 is highlighting one young woman who is breaking into the STEM field, one math problem at a time.

Hanna Kenyatta, 16, says she discovered her passion for mathematics at a very young age.

"I think everyone in my family enjoys doing math. They will always support me. My sister has been one of the biggest influences in my life," she says.

The Brooklyn Heights native is currently a junior at Loyola School and is one of the top students in her class placing within the top 2.5% at a national math competition last year.

One of Hanna's recent projects is working with researchers at Texas State University to develop an app that breaks down teachers' performance evaluations. As she preps for her college entrance exams next week, Hanna says she looks forward to breaking into male-dominated industries.

"I am really glad to be not only a woman but also a person of color in this field because I know it's limited," she says.

She says she plans to pursue a career in civil engineering.
