Capt. Tawee Theanthong is the new commanding officer of the 49th Precinct - and his journey to becoming a police officer was one of enlightenment.
Capt. Theanthong is a first generation American born to immigrant parents from Thailand. In his 20's, Capt. Theanthong became an ordained monk in his 20s after being inspired to learn more about Buddhism.
He says this path shaped his journey as an officer in the NYPD.
"When you're a monk, you have to believe those things that you're teaching. Same thing as a cop, you have to believe these things. You have to believe that you making a difference," he said.
