Police say one man is dead and another is in custody after a police chase closed the Saw Mill River Parkway along the Bronx-Westchester County border Tuesday.
At a news conference, police officials told reporters that two officers were hospitalized after the chase ended in a crash on the Saw Mill Parkway. The surviving suspect and a bystander whose car the fleeing suspects reportedly crashed into were also taken to the hospital.
Police say the pursuit started at Broadway and 242nd Street in the Kingsbridge-Riverdale section of the Bronx, just south of Yonkers. NYPD officers chased the suspects north across the border.
During the pursuit, the suspects made a U-turn into oncoming traffic on the parkway and crashed into another car, police say.
One suspect attempted to flee on foot and was fatally shot by police, according to officials. They later identified him as Miguel Espinal, a parolee. He was killed by a single shot.
The other suspect was arrested and taken to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx, as was the civilian bystander, who suffered injuries that were not life-threatening.
Drivers were advised to avoid the area if possible.
The parkway was closed between McLean Avenue and the Cross County Parkway for four hours, causing major backups. Police reopened a single southbound lane just in time for the evening rush, but traffic remained heavy near Van Cortlandt Park South, Mosholu Parkway and other major area roadways.

Most of the lanes have since reopened, although police kept the right northbound lane closed overnight.
