A 63-year-old Bronx woman who completed Sunday’s New York City Marathon hopes to inspire older runners to lace up.
Alnisa Shabazz says running a marathon is something she has always wanted to do before she retires, and can now cross it off of her bucket list.
"At mile 21, I saw my son and two grandchildren standing and I cried," Shabazz says.
She started training three years ago at the age of 60, competing in smaller races. Shabazz says all of her training has helped her toward her ultimate goal, to complete her first marathon.
The Bronx grandmother says she has always been active, but once she started running she became more serious about maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
"It can be done," Shabazz says. "It's just a habit, you have to look at it as a way of life. And it doesn't mean I don't have a piece of chocolate. Everything in moderation."
Shabazz hopes to inspire others to get out and run, no matter their age.
"It's not about time, it’s about finishing," says Shabazz.
