Councilman Ritchie Torres announced Tuesday that he’s secured $28,000 in the city budget for a Health Bucks program, which shoppers can use to buy healthy foods at green markets across the city.
Torres says he will be able to provide $17,000 in Health Bucks to those in need in the Bronx. Those that qualify for Electronic Benefits Transfer, or EBT, are eligible for the program.
No proof of income is required for the Health Bucks, and they do not expire. Torres says it will help promote healthier lifestyles for people in the state's unhealthiest county.

“If we build more green markets, if we distribute more Health Bucks, then people will have the power to live healthier and longer lives,” he says.
They are available at the councilman’s office in Fordham.
