Officials have reversed their decision to cancel the annual Christmas tree lighting in Belmont after the area's city councilman stepped in.
The Belmont Business Improvement District had earlier announced this year's event would not happen after hiring private security guards to deal with panhandlers plaguing the neighborhood.
To solve the problem, City Councilman Ritchie Torres' office says he found additional resources in his budget to go toward buying a Christmas tree, entertainment and food and drink for families and children expected to attend.
In a statement, the councilman also said he would seek enhanced funding for the BID next year to prevent another disruption for the annual event.
The event is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Dec. 12 at Ciccarone Park.
