The Department of Transportation recently approved the installation of a traffic light at Elder and Bronx River avenues.
The safety measure comes as part of the city’s ongoing “Vision Zero” initiative to dramatically reduce accidents and pedestrian fatalities citywide.
News 12 The Bronx visited the location and captured drivers rolling into the intersection to get a better view of traffic. According to the DOT, 12 people were severely injured along the half-mile long corridor on Bronx River Avenue from East 174th Street to Westchester Avenue between 2012 and 2016.
Some residents say they want the DOT to take even further action by adding a camera at the intersection.
The DOT says there were no fatalities in the past five years along the busy Bronx River Corridor.
The new traffic light is scheduled to be installed by early fall.
