Family has car safety message after son’s death
The family that lost their son in a car accident on the Bruckner Expressway Wednesday, Oct. 14 has a message for others.
Renee Cheeseboro-Blackwell says her son, Wendell Cheeseboro, is now the light shining down on her and her family.
Last Wednesday, 29-year-old Cheeseboro died in a car crash when trying to make a right turn from Edgewater Road onto the Bruckner Expressway when police say he lost control and crashed into the median.
His family says he was heading home with a co-worker after his night shift.
Police say speed played a factor in the crash, and the family says Cheeseboro was not wearing his seatbelt.
Cheeseboro's family now hopes that other families learn from his mistake.
"Parents teach your kids, I don't care what you are doing in a car, wear your seatbelt," says Cheeseboro-Blackwell.
The family is looking to the Department of Transportation to do something to the street it calls hazardous.
"The streets of New York are vicious. They need to be invested in more," says William Blackwell, Wendell Cheeseboro's father.
Wendell leaves behind his fiancée and two sons, a 4-year-old and an 8-month-old.
Wendell's family tells News 12 his passenger is still in the hospital but is expected to be fine.
