A former NYPD officer was killed in a shootout while on duty in northern Texas.
Officials say 29-year-old David Hofer died in surgery after he was shot Tuesday afternoon by a suspect.
Texas police say they were responding to a call of shots fired near an elementary school around 3 p.m. when the suspect opened fire on officers.
They say the alleged gunman was also killed during the shootout.
Hofer previously served in Manhattan's 9th Precinct for five years before moving to Texas.
