A local organization teamed up with the Parks Department to clean up West Farms Soldiers Cemetery during Memorial Day.
The cemetery has soldiers buried in it from four different wars, dating back to the War of 1812.
Nilka Martell, of Loving the Bronx, coordinated the cleaning effort. She says she's lived in the Bronx her whole life and takes pride in beautifying the borough one project at a time.
“I think everybody needs to remember what today really means, it's not all about beach and barbecues, it's about remembering everyone who served this country,” says Martell.
Volunteers from different organizations, including Partnership for Parks, also helped clean up.
Once the cleanup was finished, residents and six members of Community Board 6, along with former members of the military laid flowers as a tribute to the fallen soldiers and their service.
