Major changes to come to Bruckner Plaza
A new-look Bruckner Plaza on White Plains Road is causing concern for some residents who say they miss the small businesses that once populated the shopping center.
Jose Romero owned one of the few remaining mom-and-pop shops in the Bruckner Plaza shopping center. His shop had been open for 52 years before shutting its doors last year.
Tenants say the stores are leaving due to higher rents.
Neighbors are complaining that their favorite hangout spots are disappearing.
Urban Edge, an organization that connects landlords with tenants looking to rent property, spoke to Sen. Jeff Klein about the upcoming changes.
Sen. Klein says they told him that they are investing millions of dollars to make the shopping center a first-rate location. He also says they assured him there will be a supermarket in the area, which the community does not have within walking distance.
The previous supermarket, Key Food, closed after failing to reach a new lease agreement.
City officials say they'll have more information on which new supermarket will move in by the end of November.
