A nighttime swim led to tragedy at Orchard Beach ahead of the busy Labor Day holiday weekend.
Police say 29-year-old Adolfo Munoz got swept away while swimming with his family after-hours on Wednesday. Lifeguards go off duty at 6 p.m., and Munoz went swimming at 8 p.m.
A rescue team worked to locate him in the water, but he was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Officials say preparedness can mean the difference between fun and tragedy while enjoying the water.
According to the city Parks Department, it's important to only swim when lifeguards are on duty. Beachgoers should never leave children unattended, and should always obey all posted signs and flags. Remember to watch for dangerous waves and rip currents, and to stay alert and aware of your surroundings at all times.
