Mayor Bill de Blasio announced city plans to add 25,000 affordable housing apartments annually for the next 12 years in his City Hall in Your Borough series Tuesday, which visited East Flatbush.
That's an increase to 300,000 over the course of the years, over his previous goal of 200,000 total. Residents like Juliet Joseph say that would help people like them.
Joseph is a single mother of three and among 60,000 people who applied for just 110 available units in the neighborhood. Until she moved in this March, she was living with her mother.
"When I got the email and that I was considered it was just exhilarating," she says. "Like oh my goodness this is the chance. I'm going to get in."
The city is tackling affordable housing in other ways by providing free legal assistance to tenants, denying tax breaks for luxury condos, getting nonprofits involved and incorporating affordable units into current projects.
