The National Puerto Rican Day Parade will not take over Fifth Avenue again until 2022 because of the pandemic.

Instead, the event will be televised in a two-hour show that will celebrate all that is Puerto Rico. It'll be similar to last year's celebration in which thousands of people tuned into a virtual event instead of lining Fifth Avenue while dancing and watching the parade.

But because it's virtual, organizers say they're focusing on themes they wouldn't really be able to during the parade, like honoring the history of Puerto Rican poetry and 500 years of San Juan.

This year, the cast of "In the Heights" will serve as the grand marshals.

Lin-Manuel Miranda created the Tony Award-winning musical, produced and starred in the film that premiered Thursday night in Washington Heights.

National Puerto Rican Day Parade Board Chair Louis Maldonado calls "In the Heights" an accomplishment that celebrates all Puerto Ricans and their work.

The virtual parade will be hosted at the Center for Puerto Rican Studies at Hunter College while Museo Del Barrio and the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture on the island will also be involved as iconic institutions within the community.
