Weather experts say September is peak hurricane season, so New York City's Emergency Management department is doing all it can to prepare.
Joe Esposito, city emergency management commissioner, says Superstorm Sandy proved that many residents don't always know what to do during a natural disaster.
"Too many people don't have a plan, too many people don't know how to stay informed and too many people don't know what zone they live in," Esposito says.
A new app called Notify NYC is hoping to change that by alerting individuals if they're in an area at risk of flooding. It allows users to add up to five addresses.
The app also advises people what to pack if they need to relocate.
Esposito's team is filled with people who are tracking storms around the world 24/7 to see how they might impact New York City.
