Some Bronx residents are frustrated after learning that smoking will soon be banned from all New York City housing.

Officials with the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) and the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) are expected to announce the official smoke-free policy on Monday. The policy will prevent any smoking inside housing units, administrative offices and outdoor areas within 25 feet from all buildings.

The policy would apply to cigarettes, cigars, pipes and hookahs.

Some residents told News 12 that the policy would impact older tenants and people with disabilities because it would make it more difficult for them to walk a further distance.

NYCHA, however, says the new policy will benefit children and seniors by cutting back on second-hand smoke. They also plan to offer guidance to any NYCHA resident who is trying to quit smoking.

News 12 also reached out to NYCHA for comment on who exactly will enforce the new rule and what the repercussions will be if someone breaks it. NYCHA has yet to respond.
