The NYPD on Tuesday took part in National Night Out, an annual event intended to improve police-community relations.

The 43rd Precinct in the Bronx was one of many participating in the 35th annual event, held at more than 70 locations throughout the city.

Police officers were on hand to serve food and chat with the people they serve. Also present were 60 vendors and agencies that set up tents to inform the community about the services they offer. The 43rd Precinct invited the Bronx District Attorney's Office, fire safety, Catholic Charities, health services and domestic violence awareness groups to the event.

Mayor Bill de Blasio made a special stop by the 46th Precinct and said it was a day to be proud because the city has come a long way in fighting crime, calling it a representation of what the NYPD is looking to accomplish. It was attended by the family of Detective Miosotis Familia, who worked out of the 46th Precinct and was fatally shot last month.

De Blasio says the community needs to recognize the importance of working with police, not against them. He made a point to mention that the NYPD will be installing bulletproof windows and doors in command vehicles across the city after Familia was shot through her window.

Each community has its own way of celebrating the day, whether it be with a block party, carnival or parade. But each community is looking to achieve the same goal -- making their neighborhoods safer.
