New York City rolled out a pilot program Tuesday that supporters hope could make intersections safer for cyclists.
A recent Department of Transportation survey found that 65 percent of cyclist deaths and 89 percent of cyclists killed or seriously injured in collisions with vehicles happened at intersections.
The pilot program, which is rolling out at 50 intersections in Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan, gives cyclists a few seconds to cross an intersection before vehicles are allowed to move.
After the program ends in October, the DOT will assess if it improved safety, and by how much if it does.
