An arrest has been made following a fire Sunday night in Pelham Bay that injured two firefighters.
The fire started around 8 p.m. in a three-story apartment building on Mayflower Avenue. FDNY officials suspect the third floor was being used as a marijuana grow house.
Police arrested Luis Roman and charged him with assault and criminal possession of marijuana. He was taken into custody at the NYPD's 45th Precinct.
Officials say Thomas J. Corcoran, a 12-year veteran and married father of three, lost his footing while climbing up a 35-foot ladder on the side of the building and fell three stories. They say he is in critical but stable condition at NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi after undergoing surgery Monday.
Another firefighter suffered a leg injury.
"I apologize," Roman said when asked what he had to say to the family of the critically injured firefighter.
The FDNY used 12 trucks and more than 60 firefighters to help extinguish the flames. Officials say the fire traveled into the cockloft between the ceiling and the roof.
The city's Department of Buildings says there's been one complaint associated with the home that had to do with an illegal apartment conversion on a storage floor in 2013. That complaint is now closed.
