The incident happened at the corner of Neptune Avenue and Brighton 4th Street.
Police say they discovered the 31-year-old man's body with a stab wound to his chest.
Witnesses say the man was sitting on a chair outside of a bodega when the stabbing unfolded.
He was transported to Coney Island Hospital where he was later pronounced dead, police say.
Police say a 36-year-old man was taken into custody at the scene.
Police sources say the man in custody claims he was being robbed by the victim and stabbed him in self-defense.
Investigators did not say if the 36-year-old man was facing charges or if he was being considered a suspect.
