The Department of Transportation is adding a new traffic light at a three-way intersection on the corner of Waldo Avenue and Manhattan College Parkway, and residents say it will only cause more congestion.
The agency says it's adding the new light due to the foot traffic from college students near Manhattan College. One resident, Tim Wacker, says there has never been any issues at the intersection and no one has been injured despite the amount of traffic.
"They are creating a problem that doesn't exist," Wacker says.
Manhattan College student Anna Rosario says she thinks the light will benefit drivers too, saying they won't have to wait at a stop sign for longer than expected.
"They will be waiting at the stop sign for a good 10 minutes, waiting for kids to stop walking, so I think hopefully there will be a good balance," Rosario says.
The DOT told News 12 in a statement, "Following a citizen's request, DOT studied the location for a traffic signal and found it feasible. In the case where a signal is approved, letters are sent to the requester, the community board, and area elected officials letting them know that the signal will be installed."
