A Navy veteran from Riverdale found a passion that he's sharing with the community.

Herb Kaplan has degrees from Cornell and Harvard, but it wasn't until he started traveling the world with his wife about 15 years ago that he found another skill.

"I started taking pictures of beautiful flowers and plants and water, and I started collecting them on my computer," Kaplan says. "Then a few years ago, I realized I have taken a lot of nature photos and some of these are really good."

The photographer has taken pictures at the Bronx Botanical Garden, as well as places as far away as Chile.

His work is now on display at the Riverdale Y.

The Y features a different artist each month in "Gallery 18." All art is available for purchase and 20% of proceeds goes toward enhancing the cultural arts program at the center.

The reception is this Sunday afternoon and the art will be up at the end of the month.
