School holds Winter Olympics for students with developmental delays
Nearly 100 preschoolers in Allerton are participating in their own version of the Winter Olympics right in the borough.
The Winter Olympics at the New York Institute for Special Education is being held weeks before the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in South Korea.
The goal of the event is to have children with developmental delays work on their motor skills. The games will feature a variety of winter-related activities like ice skating, ice hockey and snowball fights.
"A lot of kids might not have the opportunity to play like this in their environments, so we like to bring this type of event to our program in a safe, happy, supportive system," says occupational therapist Elouise Mciver.
The event, which takes about two weeks to prepare, culminates in a medal ceremony.
