The son of late hip-hop artist Big Pun paired up with a charity group to pay for Christmas gifts for families in the Bronx.
Chris Rivers and the charity group Pay Away the Layaway surprised 10 families at the Kmart on Bruckner Boulevard Tuesday.
It just so happens to be Giving Tuesday, a day observed in the U.S. the Tuesday after Thanksgiving when people give back to their communities.
Rivers surprised the families with the news that their layaway items, many of them containing children's Christmas gifts, coats and clothes, would all be paid off.
"People just struggle so much for the basic, little things. To be able to give back and be involved to the capacity that I get to see these smiles and be a part of it, it's a huge thing," Rivers says.
"It's not all about gifts, but for parents this means a lot. It's why I'm so glad I can be a part of this," Rivers says.
Each year, Pay Away the Layaway uses funds it receives through donations to help pay off layaway balances between $50 to $200 for families in need.
