Bronx boxing gym organizes relief drive for quake-struck Puerto Rico

Posted: Updated:

A Bronx business with roots in Puerto Rico is organizing a relief drive as the island recovers from a series of major earthquakes and aftershocks this week.

El Maestro boxing gym on Southern Boulevard is collecting everything from bottled water to tents and pet food -- anything that could be of use for people in Puerto Rico.

The family that runs from gym comes from Ponce, an area along Puerto Rico's southern coast where the earthquakes keep striking.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, roughly 500 earthquakes of magnitude 2 or greater have hit Puerto Rico since Dec. 28. Tuesday's 6.4-magnitude quake was the largest to hit the island in a century, and it was followed by another 5.9-quake Saturday morning.

According to Puerto Rico's power authority, the latest quake left about 5,000 people without power. Thousands, mainly in southern towns, have been sleeping outdoors since Tuesday out of fear that their houses will fall while they sleep.

El Maestro boxing gym will continue to collect donations on Sunday, Jan. 12, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. They will also be collecting Monday through Friday until Jan. 25, when the items will be shipped out.
